Grebbeweg123,

The military cemetery Grebbeberg near Rhenen is the first war cemetery in the Netherlands. Only soldiers are buried here. This cemetery on the Grebbeberg is the last resting place of more than 400 Dutch soldiers who fell in May 1940 in the battle for the southernmost part of the Grebbe Line. They are buried in the ground that they have defended with their lives. After the surrender, the Dutch and German victims were buried at the scene of the battle. After the war, the remains of the German soldiers were transferred and reburied in the cemetery for German casualties in Ysselsteyn (Limburg). Since 1946 soldiers have been regularly reburied on the Grebbeberg who were killed elsewhere in the Netherlands in those May days and were buried in family graves. The plot now has more than 850 graves. |
